Joe GRIFFITHS, was visited at his home at Cronulla on Friday 19th July, 2013 by Alan Webb Sydney Metro Welfare Officer who was accompanied by John ROBINSON, South Sydney halfback in early 1960’s.
Joe has numerous health problems.
Joe played for Mascot in the South Sydney Juniors and decided at the age of 21 to take up refereeing. In 1956 he commenced to referee in the South Sydney Juniors and was appointed to Grade in 1963.
Joe decided to take a break from refereeing but his love of the game saw him involved as a Coach of various age teams, he also coached University of New South Wales (2nd grade) in the NSW Second Division Competition.
Joe returned to the referee ranks and continued as a referee until 2006 when he decided that he had had enough at 72 years of age after 50 years involvement.
He is a life member of South Sydney Referees Association.
In 2008 he was honoured with the Order of Australia for services to Australian Rugby League. Apart from Rugby League Joe was a very good runner and competed for many years with Randwick-Botany Harriers Athletic Club.
He resides with Jan, his wife and he has two children, and 3 grandchildren. Joe is a South Sydney Rabbitohs supporter.
He was presented with a Men of League Polo Shirt and Cap and a couple of items from the mighty South Sydney Rabbits.
