Its with deep sadness that I report the passing of  my wife Jenny’s mum Peggy Floyd Bowen on Friday night 23rd October at the Regis Gannon Gardens Nursing Home at Hurstville. She was 90 years young.

Born and bred in Marrickville, Peggy was a lifelong Newtown Bluebags supporter although living in Hurstville since 1949 also gave her a definate allegiance to the St George Dragons the year St George played their final home games at Hurstville Oval just up the road from what was to become the family home of over 60 years.

Jenny’s father Jack Bowen  who passed in 1996 was a Newtown junior halfback before a knee injury saw him turn to the refereeing ranks in the Newtown district and later at the suggestion of his best mate Col Pearce, became a touch judge in the Sydney first grade premiership which was capped off with him being appointed as a touch judge in the 1952 Third Test played at the SCG between Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand beat Australia 19-9 to secure the series 2-1 from the Clive Churchill captain coached Australians.

When funeral details are known for Peggy I will post….

Thanks

Scott Towers-Hammond
