My apologies to Barry and his wife as well as the rest of Peter’s family for not being able to get to Peter’s farewell….
I didn’t know Peter in my time at Chelsea in my playing days but got to know him through the photos on the website and more closely with the Central Coast Old Mates Days.
One memory sticks in my mind when I was working as a paramedic on the Central Coast in 2012 after his heart attack.
I printed a few A4 size photos of Chelsea sides he had coached in the 70s and left the ambulance bay at Gosford Hospital and went to see him in his hospital bed and gave him the photos.
He was rapt to see them and when I went back to see him a couple of days later unfortunately he was in Xray and I missed seeing him but one of the nurses said he showed off the photos to all the doctors and nurses and visitors and said to them he was proud to be a Chelsea man.
See ya Pete

To Peter’s Family:
Sincere condolences on the loss of Peter. I cherish the fond memories I spent with Peter over the years on and off the Football Field. Those were the days of no complications! Very Kind Wishes, Ron Brown.
A large crowd of Chelsea – Umina Bunnies and family and other friends came to pay their respects to champion Chelsea Old Mate Peter (Ako) Atkinson. The Chapel at Palmdale was packed with many of the younger Bunnies players standing at the rear.
The celebrant quoted ” Pud, a great mate of Ako’s attended a Chelsea Old Mates reunion at Peter’s invitation. Peter introduced Pud to Bob MacCarthy and Bob told him that as a young bloke Peter Ako was his idol such was his ability on the paddock.
As a 13 year old after arriving at Chelsea Bob’s comment rang true as that is how I felt as well. Peter was a true athlete and possessed great speed and agility. Fred Hailwood our historian told us that Peter held the record for most tries in a game for Chelsea.( 8 ).
Complete with a red and green coffin and Rabbitohs logo the final song at the end of the service was Crash Craddock’s
Boom Boom Baby – and all of those who were Ako’s life long mates pictured him singing rock & roll and having a laugh –
As he would say ” see ya kid” and maybe we will again one day. R I P Ako.
