One of the nicest blokes you would ever know is our old mate Peter Keane.
He has moved to Sydney and is well looked after by his son Ben. Peter is doing it tough with lung problems. He played in very talented Chelsea United teams in 1957 – 58 – 59. Bruce Downing and Peter are great mates and when Bruce was asked to play for Chelsea he naturally got his mate to come as well.
Peter was a hard tackling second rower and after returning to Glebe Police Boys was selected in the Balmain Presidents Cup side in 1961 and again in 1962. The South Sydney Cup side defeated Balmain in the 1962 GF . Peter had a collision with Bob MacCarthy with Bob’s knee knocking him out and causing Bob to miss the GF with Souths third grade that year with a crook knee.
Ben purchased a wheelchair for his father and true to the end it has been dubbed “the Chelsea Chair”.
The reason being it is in Chelsea colours. Chelsea Old Mates are pleased to be able to help out with the buying of the wheelchair.
We are planning a visit to see Peter in the near future.
