TRIBUTE TO AN OLD MATE

Billy McCarthy

Time appears to travel much faster as we enter our twilight years. It seems like around five years back a great mate in Billy McCarthy came from North Queensland and reunited with his many friends and former teammates at a Chelsea Old mates Day. Helen, Billy’s loving wife of many years informed me recently in was nine years ago

As planned I arrived at the Hotel in Coogee to  take him to the Chelsea Old Mates Day, he came down the steps smiling  and looking just as he did when we were young.  We looked down to the beach across the road and the wonderful memories came flooding back. This was our beach from early teens. We made sure everyone knew we were footballers by wearing our Chelsea   jerseys to the beach, not concerned about the summer heat.   Along with many of our teammates we would run full speed along the edge of the surf and dive skidding across the water. We would wrestle and tackle and generally show off trying to impress the girls. It occurs to me our tackling techniques were more likely honed in the water then at practice on the field.

On the short journey to Erskineville Bowling Club we excitedly exchanged details of what our lives were like and what our interests were as we had not been in touch for such a long time. On arrival at the club one of the first men to see Billy was Ivan Jones. He yelled out “Bloody hell” you used to be Billy McCarthy”. Quick as a flash Billy replied, “G’day Ivan, I still am Billy McCarthy”. That was the start of many stories and laughs with his old mates and of course his brother Bob.

We recently lost Billy and his many deeds as a footballer have been written and spoken about. We all know how talented, strong, fearless and fast he was on the paddock. That is well documented. He was also a great friend and you knew he would always have your back if needed. Helen has told me of the respect he had from his golfing mates who held him in high esteem. They will have a tribute day to honour him at the Half Moon Bay Golf Club.

We will remember him as a “bloody good bloke” and keep the memories going whenever we are together.
