Vale PETER KEANE.
Peter passed away on January 15, 2018 in Westmead Hospital aged 76 years. Highly respected by all who were fortunate to know him,
Peter played for Chelsea United in the late 1950’s in a very strong team before transferring to the Balmain competition where he represented in Presidents Cup
In 1961 and 1962. Playing as lock or second row he was a exceptionally tough competitor and very likeable mate, renowned for his hard running and tackling prowess.
In 1962 the touring GB team played Australia in the First Test at the SCG.
Before the Test Match Balmain played Souths in the final of the President Cup.
All three mates playing in the same games 56 years ago.
Unfortunately for Peter Souths won the Final.
NOTE : Peter was a hard tackling second rower and after returning to Glebe Police Boys was selected in the Balmain Presidents Cup side in 1961 and again in 1962.
The South Sydney Cup side defeated Balmain in the 1962 GF .
Peter had a collision with Bob MacCarthy with Bob’s knee knocking him out and causing Bob to miss the GF with Souths third grade that year with a crook knee.
His best mate Bruce Downing has been constantly in touch and visiting from his home on the south coast. Bruce, his brother Colin and Warren Thompson visited Peter
at Westmead hospital in early December 2017. All four men have been mates since they were boys living in the inner Sydney suburb of Annandale.
Many stories from their youth unfolded and lots of laughs could be heard coming from the hospital room.
Peter and Family.
Peter’s son Ben and his wife Sheila brought him from his home to live with them and cared for him until he was admitted to hospital.
They were at his side constantly and completely
devoted to him. Ben regularly took his father to Chelsea Old Mates reunions the most recent being in October 2017.
We have lost a great mate who will be remembered for his friendly smile and good heart.
