Gents, sad news of the passing of Fred Nelson aged 83. Fred coached Wests Reserve Grade between 1974 and 1979.
Fred’s funeral was held on Monday the 18th of June ‘
Fred was born in Sydney in 1935.

First Grade Player No.: 435 – Souths.
Fred played junior Rugby League with Mascot in the South Sydney competition and then Presidents Cup in 1954.
Fred was graded with Souths in the same year and went on to play for Souths until 1961.
Fred played 82 First Grade games scoring 9 tries, 28 Reserve grade games scoring 3 tries and 10 Third grade games scoring 1 try.

Fred also played for Sydney v Country in 1959 then one game for NSW V QLD in 1959.

During his time at Souths Fred won the Sun Herald best and Fairest for 1959.
Fred also played one season with Manly in 1962 playing in 13 games and scoring 3 tries.

Fred’s team Manly 26 beat Souths 23.
Fred coached Arncliffe Scots first grade in 1967 in the NSW 2nd Division Competition.
He then coached Souths Reserves between 1968-72 (premiers in 1968), had a year off from coaching in 1973 and then was appointed coach of Wests’ reserve grade side between 1974-79.
