Coached by Immortal, Clive Churchill, Souths defeated Canterbury 12-10 to take the title. Alan was born and grew up at Redfern and attended St. Benedict’s school at Broadway. He began playing with the Alexandria Rovers junior club and came into grade with Souths in 1959. He made his first grade debut in 1960 and scored his first try in the top grade at Redfern Oval on 22 May 1960 in the 17-4 win over Newtown. After two seasons with Souths, he accepted an offer to join Manly and had three seasons at Brookvale, playing 24 first grade games, mainly as a centre.  In 1965 he was the captain/coach of the Alexandria Rovers A grade side and led them to a Grand Final win.
