Alex passed away on the 8 December 2018 at the Manly Waters Private Hospital ,  after a brave battle with cancer It is said that a reflection on a Man’s life can be gauged by the number of mourners attending his Funeral Service.

Well that belief was proven to be correct by the large number of mourners who were present in a packed Magnolia Chapel at the Macquarie Park Crematorium , North Ryde on Friday 13 December 2018 at 10am.

Alex grew up in Parkham Street, Surry Hills with his sister Sandra and he attended Bourke Street Primary School like many other young students in Surry Hills and Redfern area before attending High School at Paddington Junior Technical College, where he was a conscientious , successful and sporting student.

Upon leaving school he entered the printing industry as an Apprentice Compositor at News Limited (part of the Packer Family Empire) before working for a number of years successfully with Bill Mordey’s Big League Magazine.

After enjoying a few years of bachelorhood with his Mates Billy Harvey, Denis Yates, Bobby Rainbow and Bill Leslie ( last three were present at the Funeral Service) , he met the love of his life Deanna and they married in 1966. They enjoyed a wonderful life together with their three lovely daughters Leasa, Jacqui and Danielle , son in laws Joel,Mitchell plus grandchildren Grant,Luke,Chloe and Isia.

Deanna and Alex established a family home in leafy Davidson (a Northern Sydney suburb) and enjoyed many years there before sadly Deanna passed away in 2013. She had the Chapel attendees’ in laughter as she told us of her Dad’s love of enjoying life, making new friends, helping persons in need, being the life of any party particularly at his 40th and 60th birthday celebrations, always assisting them in their sporting activities, the wonderful family holidays they shared especially the 2015 trip to Hawaii and the Happy Hours there, his love of motor vehicles, his admiration of the music of Elvis,Johnny Cash and The Troggs (played at the highest volume possible) and finally the stock of Tim Tams he maintained for the Grandkids.

Alex always loved playing and being involved in Rugby League in the strong South Sydney Junior Rugby League competitions , with the Chelsea United,Alexandria Rovers and Moore Park Juniors Rugby League Football Clubs teams and is remembered as being a talented and excellent team player. Additionally he Coached many junior rugby league teams upon retiring from playing.

Dean Harvey on behalf of his Dad,Billy, who was recovering from a hip operation delivered a Eulogy which told of his lifelong friendship with Alex including many funny incidents including how Alex was never seen without his “Man Bag” and took credit for introducing the item into men’s fashion of the time, Alex’s energy , caring and hospitality nature and how Denis, Bobby,Bill and he will never forget their Best Friend,Alex.

Daughter, Leasa beautifully read a poem titled “The Dash” by Linda Ellis , which “is an inspiration reminder that it’s not about the number of years we spend on this Earth,it’s about how we live those years that truly matter”.

*The Dash
by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard;
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?
